The Colour of Money: Conversations About Wealth & Social Inequality

This project is my attempt to have a conversation through portraits. Back in March I wrote a grant to the Sask Arts Board about creating a project to express the emotional and psychological effects of wealth and income inequality and insecurity on people in our community. It started off with a concern about mine and my families financial situation and how much of our life revolved around making money and the precariousness of our situation when it came to loss of income. Two weeks after I submitted the grant I lost my income due to Covid-19.

This project is also a conversation about my own perception of privilege and the hypocrisy of protecting what you have at the expense of others. I admit to being biased to my personal situation and being hypocritical by examining the potential loss of my own privilege as being my priority while at the same time discussing wealth and income inequalities of others as if it is something more than an abstract idea. These paintings are my way of deciphering these complex questions of my identity as a flawed person with the goal of becoming better. I hope you, the viewer, is also inspired to examine your own relationship with money and the role of money in our society.
